The next stage of work involves addition of runway and also other facilities like business centers, a luxury hotel and shops. Facilities of increased number of aircraft stands and support facilities is all part of the package. Plans are underway and are at various stages of execution. The airport can cater to as many as 12 million passengers annually and is further estimated to cater to over 18 million passengers annually.
There have been issues raised by some citizen groups regarding the distance of the airport from the city. There are questions raised regarding the problems of commuting to the airport and that too, during peak traffic hours. However the Government has a solution ready for this too. An express rail service to the airport, luxury buses plying up and down and even helicopter services are offered keeping in mind the convenience and budget of the different segments of passengers. The National Highway is also going through a widening process in order to cater to the increased traffic flow expected with the beginning of the operations at the new airport.
The passenger terminal at the Bengaluru International Airport is a centrally air-conditioned building that can cater to both the domestic and international passengers. All the major domestic and International airlines have started operating from the terminal making Bangalore accessible from any corner of the world. The five star hotel in the airport complex which is scheduled to be completed by November 2008 would make available more facilities.
